Abstract
Indonesian EFL teaching requires the students who have a good achievement in vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Therefore, relevant teaching strategies are worth being applied to help them in this globalization era. Numbered Heads Together (NHT) is a strategy which is believed help students to have a good achievement in vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. This study is aimed at the use of NHT in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension on recount text. A quasi experimental, specifically non-equivalent control group design was used. Forty six students of the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 20 OKU were selected as a sample and equally divided into experimental and control group. Vocabulary and reading comprehension tests were administered in order to collect the data. The findings showed that (a) there were significant difference in vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension on recount text after the students were taught by using NHT, (b) there were significant difference in vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension on recount text between the students who were taught by using NHT and those who were not, and (c) there were significant contribution of vocabulary aspects to vocabulary mastery and reading aspects to reading comprehension on recount text after the students were taught by using NHT.
