Abstract

Old age was a natural phenomenon as a result of the aging process. It was also possible that oral health problems lead to changes in the quality of life of the elderly. The purpose of this study was determine a relationship between chewing ability based on Functional Tooth Units (FTUs) index and quality of life using Gerriatric Oral Health Asessment Index (GOHAI) of elderly people at Tresna Werdha Teratai and Dharma Bakti care homes. The survey of this study used cross-sectional analytical approach and it was held at Tresna Werdha Teratai and Dharma Bakti care home in Palembang. Eighty-six samples of elderly people who included the inclusion criteria were sampled. Information on age, sex, and quality of life collected by distribute questionaires through interview method. Chewing ability on FTUs (Functional Tooth Units) index and edentulous status collected on PDI (Prosthodontic Diagnostics Index) through clinical examination. The results of this study indicated the average of FTUs for Tresna Werdha Teratai was 7.39 and 3.48 for Dharma Bakti care home. Chewing ability on FTUs index correlated with quality of life using statistical analysis kendall-tau Zhitung value 0.084 <1.96 Ztabei for Tresna and Dharma Bakti obtained Zhitung -0.55 <Ztabci 1.96. In conclusion, chewing ability has no relationship to the quality of life of the elderly in both care homes. It is necessary for further research related to caries status examination, and mouth disease that disrupt the quality of life elderly.
