Abstract

This research is entitled ''Lapo Tuak as a public space from the perspective of Jurgen Habermas in Sinaman Labah Village, Simalungun Regency''. The purpose of this research is to find out about Lapo Tuak as a public space from the perspective of Jurgen Habermas. The method used is a case study qualitative research method with data collection techniques namely observation, interviews, and documentation. This study uses the theory of public space according to Jurgen Habermas. The results of this study indicate that Lapo Tuak as a public space almost fulfills Jurgen Habermas' perspective, because of the four conditions for the emergence of public space in Jurgen Habermas' perspective, there are dimensions that are lacking or not fulfilled in Lapo Tuak as a public space in Jurgen Habermas' perspective, namely regarding gender in The background of visitors is dominated by men, because the Batak tribe adheres to a patriarchal system. However, Lapo Tuak has become a vessel that provides a conducive environment for interaction in accordance with Jurgen Habermas's thoughts through opportunities for social interaction and communication in which there is rational and critical interaction in responding to issues, a collaborative discussion space is also formed, in which the community mutual tolerance, mutual respect, mutual openness, and mutual respect for differences.
