Abstract
Sunscreen is a cosmetic product that physically and chemically can prevent the penetration of UV ray into the skin. Rose leaves (Rosa chinensis Jacq.) have potential of being sunscreen because it contains phenolic, flavonoid and tannin compounds that have the ability to absorb UV ray. The formulation of sunscreen gel is conducted using the combination of HPMC and carbopol as a gelling agent. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of rose leaves ethanol extract gel with F1:1.5%, F2:3% and F3:6% concentrations as sunscreen. The SPF value of sunscreen gel is obtained by measurement using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and followed by Mansur measurement. The value of F1, F2 and F3 sunscreen gel sequentially are 6.37; 11.67; and 18.67, which fulfill FDA requirements as sunscreen. F1 has extra protection, F2 has maximum protection, F3 has ultra protection. The result of the study shows that the formula with the highest SPF value is F3 with pH value, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, washability, and drug release kinetic of 4.96; 2.139,60 cps; 5.64 cm; 4.47 seconds; 8.8 mL; and drug release kinetic fit Higuchis model. The result of the stability test F3 is stated to be stable with no significant difference in pH and no syneresis in the cycling test, and >0,80 of AUCI value obtained in photostability test.
