Abstract

Backgrounds : Various kinds of preventions have been developed to get healthy periodontal tissues. The antibacterial that contained in natural materials as clinical material has become the new innovations in preventing periodontal disease. Apple skin contains phenolic compounds that are antibacterial, like flavonoids and tannins. Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of apple skin extract (Malus domestica) as antibacterial in one of pathogenic bacteria in the periodontal tissues, Porphyromonas gingivalis. Material and Method : This study was an experimental in vitro laborator. The bacteria cultured in a medium that was made on well diffusion technique divided into 5 groups: 1) amoxicillin as the control; 2) 20% apple peel extract 3) 25% apple peel; 4) 30% apple peel extract; and 5) 35% apple peel extract. Afier incubated for 2x48 hours, inhibition zone was measured using vernier calipers. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc analysis. Result : The entire treatment groups were signiflcantly had inhibitory zone differences (p <0.05). There were no inhibitory zone in concentration 20%, so the most ejfective concentration occure in a concentration of25%. Conclusion : Apple peel extract shown to have antibacterial effects against bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis startingfrom a concentration of 25%.
