Abstract

Background Maxillary intercanine width is known correlated with dental arch form and facial breadth. Dental arch form has a correlation with facial type which determined by facial index measurement. Most of the population in Palembang is Deutro Malay. Research about the relationship maxillary intercanine width and facial index of Deutro Malay in Palembang has not been done. Aim. To determine the relationship between maxillary intercanine width and facial index of Deutro Malay. Material and Method Type of this study is analytic study research with cross sectional design. This study involved 60 college student of Sriwijaya University (30 males and 30 females) who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Facial index measurement was carried out with a spreading caliper and then calculated by facial index formula. Impression and fabrication study model of the maxillary was carried out and was measured of maxillary intercanine width using a sliding caliper. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smimov and Pearson correlation tests. Result Result of this study showed mean of maxillary intercanine width of Deutro Malay is 3,45 ± 0,20 cm and mean of facial index showed facial type is euryprosop. Kolmogorov- Smimov test showed normally distribution of data. Pearson correlation test showed there were very significant relationship between maxillary intercanine width and facial index of Deutro Malay (P <0,01) and has negatif correlation (r = -0,438), it means that the larger of the maxillary intercanine width, the smaller of the facial index (euryprosop) or vice versa. Conclusion. There were very significant relationship between maxillary intercanine width and facial index of Deutro Malay with mean of maxillary intercanine width of Deutro Malay is 3,45 ± 0,20 cm and mean of facial index showedfacial type is euryprosop.
