Abstract

Cutting fluids are an essential requirement in the modern factory manufacturing sector. Since the cutting fluid helps in increasing tool life, it reduces vibration by providing a damping effect, reducing tool wear. The absence of cutting fluid leads to increased power consumption, rapid tool wear and poor surface finish. Even a small amount of lubricant, as in the MQL method, can improve machining quality by reducing surface roughness and reducing cutting forces. Vegetable oil has become a good choice as a lubricant for metal cutting because of their properties such as high lubricity, biodegradability vegetable oil has become a good choice as an excellent lubricant, and is environmentally friendly. The choice of castor oil and corn oil, namely castor oil, this oil the most viscous of all lubricants, shows high liquidity, forms a solid protective layer on the workpiece so that it shows high anti-friction properties, and corn oil as a renewable vegetable oil that is biodegradable and more environmentally friendly when compared to conventional cutting fluids. This research was conducted to know the comparison of the MQL process which uses castor oil and also corn oil which uses nano fluid as a mixture of each oil. The quality of the machining process is determined by the resulting surface roughness. In this study, optimization of milling machining parameters and comparison between two cutting fluid oils made from vegetable oil was carried out on the surface roughness of AISI 1045 steel workpieces. The cutting fluids used were castor oil, corn oil, where castor oil and corn oil were varied by mixing Al2O3 xviii nanoparticles. The milling machining parameters that are varied are cutting speed, feed motion, and axial feed depth. The value of the cutting speed affects the surface roughness where the greater the value of the cutting speed the smaller the roughness of the test object. The value of the feed motion where the greater the feed, the rougher the surface of the test object. The value of the depth of feeding where the greater the value of the compressive force on the test object, the surface roughness is also high. The use of a mixture of corn oil and nanoparticles can cause a significant difference in roughness, which is 12.6% compared to using other oils.
