Abstract

Background: Nosocomial infection in JCU is an infection which develops 48 hours after ICU admission or wilhin 48 hours after being discharged. The prevalence of nosocomial infections is 5 to 10 limes greater in ICU patients than patients n general units. Nosocomial infection is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to asses the frequency of nosocomial infection and determine antimicrobial resistance in General ICU of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital during 01 January-30 Juni 2011. Method: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted from October to December 2011, in General ICU of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital. The population and samples of study were General ICU patients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital during 01 January-30 Juni 2011. Those samples were taken using total sampling. Data was entered in distributive frequency using SPSS version 16 and some data were calculated mcmually. Results: During the study period, there were 283 patients admitted in the general ICU. The frequency of nosocomial infection was 12,4%. Positrve infection were foimd at sputum (48,5%), blood (26,5%), urine (12,5%), pus (6,2%), combustion specimen (3,1%), drainage (1,6%), and bula drain (1,6%). The pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (22,78%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (20,5%), Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (16,45%), Klebsiela pneumoniae (12,65%), Candida glabrata (8,86%), Ccmdida albicans (7,59%), Streptococcus bovis (3,8%), Enterococcus faecalis (2,5%), Enterobacter agglomerans (2,5%), Escherecia coli (1,3%), dan Pseudomonas maltophilia (1,3%). Resistance pattem showed that the bacteria have the highest resistance against cefotaxim, gentamicin, cotrimoxazole, chloramfenicol, and amoxicillin. Conclusion: The high rates of resistance pathogens responsible for nosocomial infection in General ICU suggests that infection preventive procedures should be implemented strictly and antimicrobial distribution guidelines should be revised periodically.
