Abstract

Background: Some studies found that total cholesterol is one of thefactors that influence the formation of gallslones. However, there is a difference in the results found in other studies in which total cholesterol does not have a significant effect on the formation of gallslones. The different result and an increased prevalence of cholelithiasis made wan t to know the relationship between total cholesterol and gallstone formation. Objective: The relationship of total serum cholesterol levels with the formation of gallstones in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: A retrospective analytic descriptive study with cross-sectional design performed on inpatienls in the department of Surgery and Internal Medicine RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Sampling w as conducted on the patient's medical file the period January I, 2009 - October 31, 2011 with consecutive sampling in the Medical Record department of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Percentage of men 28 people (37.3%) and females 62.6% (47 people). The mean value of mal e total cholesterol is 211 mg/dL, while women's 213.58 mg/dL%. There significant relationship between the sexes with gallstone formation. But sex is a risk factor for gallstone formation (p=0.211; OR=2.350; 95%CI=0.680-8.115). There was no significant association between total serum cholesterol levels with gallstone formation (p=l. 000; OR=0974; 95% 01=0.288-3.294).
