Abstract

Introduction: Incident of constipation in toddler is still high enough. The habitual of wacthing televition more than two hours per day often causes constipation. The objectives of this study was to determine the proportion of referred children with watching television more than two hours per day and constipation, to determine the relationship between habitual of watching television more than two hours per day habit. Method: This crossectional, analitic-observasional study, was conducted in November-December 2012, included children 1* grade who were attending 36 of elementary schools under Department of Education at Seberang Ulu I Sub-distnct in Palembang by quesionnaires. Limitation of watching television more than two hours per day habit and incident of constipation used in this study were during last week. Results: There were 353 samples that consist of 67,1% samples with watching television more than two hours per day habit and 32,9% samples with watching televion less than two hours per day habit. Characteristic of defecation in constipation were 24,9% refusal of defecation, 17,6% of soiling period, 16,7% had defecation distress, 16,1% of ffequency defecation was less than 3 times per week, and 11,9% of hard stool consistency. Proportion of constipation was 35,9% with watching television more than two hour per day habit and 13,8% with watching television less than two hour per day habit. There was statistically significant difference between watching television more than two hour per day habit with constipation (p = 0,000). Conclusion: There were statistically significant association between watching television more than two hours per day habit with constipation in la grade who were attending 36 of elementary schools under Department of Education at Seberang Ulu I Sub-district in Palembang.
