Abstract

Background: Lower respiratory tract infection is the 3"1 rank of mortalitity in the world. Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the bacteria that mostly infect lower respiratory tract. Since mortality rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is high, this research was done to discover a new altemative therapy. Methods: This research was a true experiment by using the posttest only control group design. In this work, the garlic extract was given 2 various treatments: concentration and pH. The significant difference of treatments was further analyzed by honesty significant test. The analysis of regresion was made to determine the relationship between concentration and pH garlic extract against the inhibitory zone diameter. Results: The Analysis of variance showed that concentration and pH had high significant effect against the inhibitory zone diameter. The optimum concentration of aqueous garlic extract was 75%. The optimum pH of aqueous garlic extract was 4-5. Minimum inhibitory concentration of aqueous garlic extract in this research was 75% for Streptococcus pneumoniae. Inhibitory zone diameter of ciprofloxacin was wider than inhibitory zone diameter of aqueous garlic extract. Conclusion: Aqueous garlic extract inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae growth at concentration 75% or higher. The higher concentration the wider inhibitory zone diameter. The lower pH (more acidic) the wider inhibitory zone diameter. Antibacterial property of aqueous garlic extract was less potent than ciprofloxacin.
