Abstract

Introduction: Childhood tuberculosis is the main cause ofhigh morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries. Difficulty in obtaining reports of childhood TB, especially in Palembang, causes targeting data hard to achieve. There are factors contributing to causing TB in children, such as nutrition, BCG vaccination, history of close contact, and characteristics of demography. Objective: This study is conducted to determine the prcvalence and characteristics of childhood tuberculosis at Departement of Pediatrics Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital in July 2012 to July 2013. Methods: This study is observational descriptive method by using cross-sectional approach. Result: In this study a total of 106 children were diagnosed with TB, with the prevalence of childhood TB to all TB cases of 31.92%. However, only 47 children were observed with pulmonary TB; 34 (51.1%) children with history of close contact; 20 (42.6%) with nutrient deficiency; 34 (72.3%) vaccinated with BCG; 17 (36.2%) children and 21 (44.7%) children with fathers and mothers with low education (elementary school) respectively. It was observed that 45 (95.7%) fathers with a TB child are employed and 26 (55.3%) mothers with a TB child unemployed. Conclusion: TB in children shows a high rate ofpercentage; most children came with history of close contact, nutrition deficiency, BCG vaccination, and parents with low education (elementary school), employed fathers, and unemployed mothers.
