Abstract

White tea has pharmacological activity as an antidiabetic because it contains polyphenol compounds in the form of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which can inhibit the α-glucosidase enzyme so that blood glucose levels can be returned within normal limits. However, plant extracts have low oral bioavailability, so the formula in the form of SNEDDS (Self-Nano Emulsifying Drug Delivery Systems) is an option that can increase the solubility of white tea extract. This study aims to determine the effect of SNE administration of white tea extract on decreasing blood glucose levels, creatinine and urea levels, and the histopathological profile of the kidneys in type-2 diabetes mellitus rats. Six groups of rats were conditioned by intraperitoneal-induced diabetes with a streptozotocin-nicotinamide dose of 45 mg/Kg. STZ only induced the negative control group, the positive control group was given 5 mg of glibenclamide, a group I was given SNE base 100 mg/KgBB, group II was given SNE white tea extract 100 mg/kgBB and group III was given white tea extract 100 mg/KgBB. The test animals were treated for 28 days with blood sampling on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The decrease in blood glucose levels of SNE white tea extract was not significantly different from the positive control (glibenclamide)(p> 0, 05). The decrease in white tea extract's SNE creatinine and urea levels was not significantly different from that of glibenclamide (p>0.05). Histopathological results of the test animals' kidneys showed no difference in necrosis in the white tea extract SNE group in line with the normal group. Based on these results, it was concluded that SNE white tea extract 100mg/Kg BB has antidiabetic activity.
