Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of childhood tuberculosis in the world still quite high, especially in Palembang. The diagnosis of TB in children is difficult to determine because of the absence of the gold Standard examination and clinical presentation is not specific. Therefore, the goal of this research is to evaluate the characteristics of childhood tuberculosis at RSMH Palembang. Method: This observalional descriplive study was conducted in Oclober to December 2013. Source of data is the secondary data from medical record of childhood tuberculosis case at Department of Children 's Health RSMH Palembang Period July 2012 to July 2013. There were 47 samples of this study. Results: Oul of 47 admitted samples, 59.6% was male and 40.4% was female. 42.6%o patients were less than 5 years, 34.0% patients were between 5-<10 years, 21.3% patients were between I0-< 15 years, and 2.1% patients were between ISIS years. The most frequent symptom seen in patient was fever (63.8%o), then anorexia (57.4%), weight loss (44.7%), cough (42.6%), malaise (38.3%), lymphadenopathy (31.9%) and night sweats (27.7%). AFB was isolated in sputum in only 23.8% patients, tuberculin test was positive in 55% and most common x ray finding 51.5% is infiltrate. Conclusion: This study showed that majority ofTB patients was male, and most of cases were less than 5 years. The most frequent symptom seen in patient was fever. AFB was rarely found in sputum, however tuberculin test was positive more, and the most common x ray finding is infiltrate.
