Abstract

Twitter is now one of the most popular social media among students today. Students use Twitter as a means to show self-existence and social life. At the age of students, it is the age when students are still looking for identity. So that's why Twitter has become one of the media for students to channel their creativity. The purpose of this study is to explain the formation of virtual identities of Twitter user students at Sriwijaya University through Twitter social media. The theoretical basis used is the identity theory of Manuel Castells. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study found that in using Twitter the students already had a concept that they would use. The influence of the surrounding environment is one of the factors that influence students in forming self-identities. One indicator that shows the existence of informants through the number of likes (likes) or comments. Most of the informants were inspired by influencers, so they made lots of different tweets. Most of the contents of the informant's Twitter tweets contain text and photos about him. Existence is important for teenagers, especially on social media like Twitter. Their existence will be seen by teenagers, along with their existence on social media, Twitter. Keywords: Twitter, Sriwijaya University Students, Self Identity
