Abstract
Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a disease that could potentially leads to significant quality-of-life impairment. The incidence of CRS nowadays tends to rise, yet there isn’t any puolication in Indonesia conceraing about this issue. The population of CRS patients in South Sumatra may had different characteristics compared to the rest of population in Indonesia, however there wasn't any available data to support this claim. The purpose of this research is to determine the prevalence of CRS patients who seek treament to the ENT-Head and Neck Surgery Clinic at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Method: This research was a descriptive study with cross-sectional design. The population of this research were all CRS patients who seek treatment to the ENTHead and Neck Surgery Clinic at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from 1 January 2011-31 December 2012. The entire population became samples in this research Result: The prevalence of CRS was 17.96%. The most commonly affected female (56.8%), adult by age (72.6%), and lived in Palembang (68.4%). The most frequent chief complaint was nasal congestion (46.3%). The most frequently encountered predisposing factor were infection (33.7%), followed by allergy (26.3%), and infection combined with allergy (25.6%). The most ffequently involved sinus was maxillary sinus (89.5%). Administration of oral antihistamin, which is not recommended for CRS were still given to 57.9% of the patients. Conclusion: The prevalence of CRS in South Sumatra demonstrated similar characteristics compared to other provinces of Indonesia.
