Abstract
Sentence is an important element in text processing. Period is one of symbols that marks the end of a sentence. On the other hand, period is also used as marking for abbreviation, narrative list, etc. So, there is ambiguity if we find a period in a sentence since it can be the end of sentence, abbreviation, or narrative list. This research uses the artificial neural network to build a system to resolve the ambiguity, i.e., the system can automatically determine whether a period is the end of the sentence or not. Feed-forward neural network is used to learn the relation between the function of period and its surrounding words. Experiments show that after the learning process, the system can accurately determine whether a period is the end of the sentence or not, except in some special cases.
