Abstract

Background: Family planning is a plan to attain and control desired number of children and the spacing their births by using the contraception. This study aimed to get the prevalence and factors that affect the use of oral contraception in district of Sukarame, Palembang. In addition, this study also aimed to determine the relationship between sosiodemographic factors (age, occupation, education, parity and age of the youngest child) with the use of oral contraception. Method: A cross-sectional study had been done in Sukarame, Palembang from November to December 2011. Prevalence was calculated using the prevalence rate formula, and then the analysis of univariate, bivariate and multivariate obtained through the SPSS 18 program. Results: Respondents who had used oral contraception were as much as 15% while 85% of the respondents were not taking the pills. Analysis showed that factor of age (OR=37.972, 95% CI=3.203-450.167, p=0.004) and parity (OR=0.057, 95% CI=0.009-0.355, p=0.002) was factors that had a significant relation compare to the other factors which education (OR=4.962, 95%CI= 0.514-47.901, p=0.166), occupation (OR=0.758, 95%CI=0.085- 6.738, p=0.803) and age of the youngest child (OR=0.441, 95%CI=0.103- 1.889, p=0.270) that had insignificant relation. This study showed that age factor was the most influential factors on this research in district of Sukarame, Palembang. Conclusion: The use of oral contraception in districts of Sukarame, Palembang was yet need to be promoted more widely as ideas of the govemment about family planning can be achieved.
