Abstract

Background: Glutathione S-Transferases (GSTs) are phase II metabolizing enzyms that play a main role in biotransformation of drugs and detoxifying potentially xenobiotic compounds in our body. The genetic polymorphism GSTs that induced by gene deletion mutations may be contribute in detoxifying various toxic xenobiotics. GSTM1 is one of GSTs subclass that has a high percentage of polymorphism in general population. So if there is a deficiency of GSTM1 it will refer to the high risk exposure to cancer. The deficiency of GSTM1 has been shown to increase the susceptibility to DNA formation and cytogenic damage which are generally thought to possess considerable mutagenic and carcinogenic potential. Objective: This study aims to know the prevelance of GSTM1 null allele gene polymorphism that plays an important role in detoxification of various toxic compoimds like carcinogen of the Malay in South Sumatera. Methods: This study is a laboratory research, which is also an observational descriptive study. The subject of this research are 80 blood sampels in the Biomolecular Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine Sriwiijaya University. GSTM1 null allele gene polymorphism was genotype using the multiplex PCR. Results: The distribution of genotype wild type and null allele on the subject of the study is 33 (94,3%) and 2 (5,7%). Conclusion: OverView of the wild type genotype were found in the samples, which is 33 samples (94,3%), while the null allele was 2 (5,7%).
