Abstract
TiO2 is a semiconductor material as a catalyst to degrade pollutants. On the other hand, TiO2 is easily dissolved in many solvents. Therefore, it needs to be doped with NiFe2O4 and coated with chitosan-glutaraldehyde. The synthesized NiFe2O4/chitosan-glutaraldehyde/TiO2 composite was used to reduce the concentration of methylene blue solution. The synthesized composite was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, VSM, and UV-Vis DRS methods. The pHpzc value of the synthesized composite was determined in the pH ranging from 2-11.6. There were several photodegradation variable used in this study, such as pH, concentration, and irradiation time. The XRD analysis showed the highest 2θ peak for NiFe2O4 crystals at 35.74o and TiO2 at 48.09o with a crystal size of 28.76 nm for NiFe2O4 and for TiO2 of 92.55 nm. SEM-EDS showed a homogeneous morphological structure with constituent elements consisting of Ni (12.58%), Fe (38.29%), O (34.17%), C (6.54%), N (0.58%), and Ti (5.98%). VSM showed a saturation magnetization value of 44.35 emu/g. UV-Vis DRS showed a band gap value of 1.78 eV. The pHpzc value of NiFe2O4/chitosan-glutaraldehyde/TiO2 composite was obtained at pH 8.315. The optimum conditions for reducing the concentration of methylene blue solution by the NiFe2O4/chitosan-glutaraldehyde/TiO2 composite was at pH 10 with a concentration of 5 mg/L and irradiation time of 75 minutes. TOC analysis showed that the percentage of effectiveness in reducing carbon in methylene blue solution was 81.645%.
