Abstract

Steel material is a type of material that is often used, especially in the industrial sector because it has tough strength, and is economical. One of the steel materials is AISI 1045 steel which is a medium carbon steel group, in order to increase the hardness value of the steel it is given heat treatment at a temperature of 900oC and performs fast immersion with a cooling medium. The media given to steel are palm oil, coconut oil, and used cooking oil, while the media is given heat treatment but is not given cooling media. The research was carried out in the type of pure experiment with the aim of knowing the hardness level of steel after getting heat treatment and fast immersion. The calculation results obtained are using palm oil cooling media on specimen (3) 304.941 kgf/mm2, using head oil cooling media on specimen (4) 279.099 kgf/mm2, using used cooking oil cooling media on specimen (1) 265.211 kgf/mm2, and without using cooling media on the specimen (2) 210.387 kgf/mm2. So, it can be seen that the cooling medium that has a big influence on the hardness value of medium carbon steel is palm oil. Keywords : Heat Treatment, AISI 1045, Hardness Value
