Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases. RAS makes patients feel discomfort and it reduces the quality of life, therefore it need an adequate treatment to accelerate the healing of RAS. The purpose of this study was to evalute the effect of gambir extract (Uncaria gambir) on the healing of RAS. This study was using pretest-posttest with control group consist of 30 people with RAS in Oral and Dental Hospital in South Sumatra (RSKGM) and UPT clinic of Sriwijaya University. Subjects were divided into two groups : gambir extract and placebo as negative control. The subjects of each group were instructed to apply gambir extract or placebo ointment three times a day for seven days. The healing duration of RAS was observed until recover and size of the lesion was measured by using probe UNC-15 at baseline, day 1, day 3, and day 7. The results showed that healing duration of RAS was significanly faster in gambir extract group compared to placebo group (p<0.05). Size of RAS lesion at day 3 and 7 in gambir extract group were significanly reduced than placebo group (p<0.05). It can be concluded that gambir extract improve healing potential of RAS. Key Words : gambir extract, healing duration, recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
