Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of problem based learning on the ability to write explanatory texts in class XI Pusri High School Palembang. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental method. The sample in this study consisted of two classes namely class XI IPS 1 amounting to 27 students as the experimental class using a problem-based learning model and class XI IPS 2 totaling 27 students as a control class using a scientific learning model, with a total of the number of students is 54 students. Data collection techniques using explanatory text writing test techniques were carried out twice namely the initial test and the final test, while the data processing technique used the t-test with the SPSS 24 program. The results showed that there were differences in the results of the initial and final tests between the experimental class and class control. The average value of the initial test of the experimental class is 55.52 and for the average value of the final test is 85.59, between the initial test and the final test the experimental class has increased in value by 30.07. While the average value of the initial control class test was 50.63 and the average score of the control class final test was 69.26, between the initial test and the final test the control class had an increase of 18.63. Based on the results of the research above, it shows that the experimental class has a higher increase than the control class. This shows that the t-test calculation proves that tcount> t table = 5,038> 2,007 with df = 52 at a success rate of 95% (α = 0,025), because tcount is greater than t table, then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In connection with the Ha statement accepted, this study can be concluded that the problem based learning model is an influential model in learning explanatory text writing in class XI Pusri High School Palembang.
