Underweight and low birth weight are important marker of Global Nutrition Targets in 2025. Reducing of underweight can be achieve with decreasing low birth weight in newborns. This study aimed to analyzing not only relationship between low birth weight and underweight but also low birth weight and another factors with underweight comprehensively. A community based cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of underweight, low birth weight and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Seberang Ulu I subdistrict in Palembang. Samples were mothers of children aged 6-59 months who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, such as children with single birth or who were either the first or the last child in the family. While exclusion criteria were households that have moved and mothers who refused to join this study. Samples in this study was around 114 of eligible mothers which selected by simple random sampling. Children aged 6-59 months with low birth weight have a higher risk to become underweight than children with normal birth weight after controlling by having diarrhoea & ARI in the last 1 month, mother’s hand washing practice, availability of latrine and household monthly income (p-value<0.05). Better nutrition in the womb can prevent low birth weight and better mother’s hand washing practice can also prevent infectious disease and reducing underweight in children aged under five. Hand washing practice must be encouraged to become a healthy lifestyle.
