Abstract

Unmet need for modern contraception refers to women who want to limit or space their pregnancy but not using modern contraception. Unmet need has an impact on the incidence of unwanted pregnancy which also affects to do unsafe abortion. High unmet need can increase fertility rates. The prevalence of unmet need for contraception in the 2017 IDHS is 11%. This figure is still below the BKKBN target, which is 9.91%. The aim of this study was conducted to investigate the magnitude and the most dominant of determinant related to this event in Indonesia in 2017. This study used a secondary data of the 2017 IDHS with a cross sectional study design. Data obtained from 24,762 respondents who are women on reproductive age and currently married. Data were analyzed with univariate, bivariate, and multivariate by using complex samples. The prevalence of unmet need for modern contraception in Indonesia is 22.7%. Bivariate analysis showed a relationship between age, education, number of living children, ideal number for children, family planning decision makers, contraceptive discussions with husband, place of residence, and economic status with unmet need for modern contraceptive. The most dominant factor affecting the event of unmet need contraception is family planning (FP) decision makers in the category taken by other (not the respondent or her husband) [PR: 2,187 (CI: 1,233-3,881)]. Some married women in Indonesia still have an unmet need for modern contraception and couple still no independent in making decisions for family planning (FP). Realizing independence in organizing family planning can be done with promotional efforts to encourage couples of reproductive age to join the FP program and to encourage them to do FP consultations to health facilities, especially in rural areas.
