Abstract

Corn is one of staple food with increasing demand and requires to increase its production. Cultivation of corn plants in tidal land has salinity problems causing crop toxicity. This study aims to determine the effect of low salinity pretreatment on the growth and salinity tolerance of corn plants, carried out at green house of Crop Cultivation Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The experimental design was arranged in a split plot with three replications, salinity as the main plot and corn variety as the sub plot. Three varieties used were Arjuna, Bisma, and Sukmaraga. Salinity treatments were control, 15 mM pretreatment for 45 mM salinity treatment, 30 mM pretreatment for 45 mM salinity treatment, without pretreatment for 45 mM salinity treatment, 15 mM pretreatment for 60 mM salinity treatment, 30 mM pretreatment for 60 mM salinity treatment, 45 mM pretreatment for 60 mM salinity treatment, and without pretreatment for 60 mM salinity treatment. The experiment was conducted using a standard Kimura B solution and the pH level was maintained at 5.5 to 5.8 using 0.1 N of HCl or NaOH. The result showed that salinity treatment significantly decreased growth parameters of all corn varieties tested. When the salinity in the field is at the level of 45 mM, salinity pretreatment of 15 mM will increase salinity tolerance of those of three varieties; but when the salinity level is 60 mM, Arjuna and Bisma would rather give their good response at 30 mM pretreatment and those of Sukmaraga was at 15 mM pretreatment. Based on the parameters measured, Arjuna showed better tolerance to salinity compare with Bisma and Sukmaraga.
