Abstract

Swampy land is one of the alternative land that can be used for various agricultural production activities. In general, swampy land can be categorized into two major ecosystems, fresh-water and tidal swampy lands. In the fresh-water swamp land, the main problems are the submergence stress that limits growth and crop production, low pH and low essential nutrients. Meanwhile, the main problem in the tidal wetlands are submergence, pyrite layer, and NaCl toxicity. Although many constraints faced to improve these lands into more productive land, its utilization has provided a significant contribution to Indonesian food security system. The Indonesian government has long given its great attention to the agricultural development of tidal swampy lands since the 70s. In the early program, the Indonesian government started to bring transmigrants from Java in the hope that this areae would become one of crop production center in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the development of fresh-water swamp land is far left behind. Crop cultivation system dependent heavily on natural seasonal conditions. Fresh-water swamp land basically has marginal and fragile condition, so that its development requires careful planning and development. There should be an integrated development program based on land condition inventory and local wisdom, crop tolerant to swampy condition, improved cultivation method. The specific condition of swampy land and its marginal character has made the need for specific handling and treatment differently from any other land. Generally, crop varieties released were rice varieties that can produce under optimal conditions. There has been some new varieties that tolerance under unfavorable swampy conditions. Some new varieties released are tolerance under submergence conditions and also under tidal swampy conditions. In this paper, we present and discuss current research conducted in Indonesia in order to obtain crop tolerance under swampy condition. We also discuss crop cultivation technology that has been developed to improve crop production under swampy condition in Indonesia. Keywords:Crop tolerance, swampy condition, crop cultivation, Indonesia.
