Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand the effect of light colours on the bio-ecology of oriental cowpea weevil Callosobruchuschinensis. The,research was conducted from December 2017 to January 2018 in the Laboratory of Insectarium, Department of Plant Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The research was an experimental research arranged in a,Completely Randomised Design (RCBD) with 6 treatments and 3 replications. Light colour was used as the treatment, consisted of 6 levels i.e. red, green, yellow, blue, white and dark. Yellow was less preferred light colour by C. chinensis weevil. The lowest average number of imagoes appeared on the surface of mungbean stored under yellow light was 6.67, while the average number of second generation of pupae and imagoes were 11.00 and 7.66, respectively. The damage intensity of the bean stored under yellow light was 3.32% and weight reduction was 15.42%. Blue was the most preferred light colour by the C. chinensisweevil with highest average number of on surface imagoes was 15.00. The highest damage intensity was found on mung bean stored in the dark with damage percentage of 32%, while the lowest damaged intensity was found under white light with average damage percentage of 2.16%. The highest weight, reduction was found under dark storage with average damage intensity of 32%, and the lowest was found under white light storage with average damage intensity,of 9.42%.
