Abstract

The giving exclusive breastfeeding has an important role in growth and development in infants. One of the factors that influence mothers to succeed in the breastfeeding process is the commitment of mothers to breastfeed. The main purpose of this study to analyze the commitment of mothers in exclusive breastfeeding. This study used a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. Informants were selected based on the purpose sampling method, with a total 19 people consisting of 4 exclusive breastfeeding mothers, 4 non-exclusive breastfeeding mothers, 8 families close to the mothers and 3 midwives. Qualitative data analysis and validation was done through triangulation. Mothers were committed to giving exclusive breastfeeding on the basis of desire and intention, as well the realization of the importance of breastfeeding on the other hand, mothers that are not committed was due to experiencing barriers and imitating the behaviour of people around them. Factors that influence commitment in breastfeeding include: perceived benefits to action, perceived barriers to action, perceived self-efficacy), activity related effect, interpersonal influence and situational influences. In conclusion, it can be concluded that the type of commitment mothers gives in breastfeeding was internalization. Mothers are not committed because experiencing barriers in the form of breast milk not coming out and imitating the behaviour of the surrounding community to provide additional food for infants under 6 months of age. Suggestions are expected by mothers in the Muara Saling Community Health Center work area to increase knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding by attending posyandu, reading KIA books, consulting with village midwives, and reading articles on exclusive breastfeeding on social media such as google.
