Abstract
Pd-Ni/C catalyst with a mass ratio of Pd:Ni = 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 was successfully synthesized by the impregnation method. Pd-Ni/C catalyst ink is sprayed onto the surface of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) to obtain Pd-Ni/C electrodes. Pd-Ni/C electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. CV characterization aims to determine the catalytic activity of the electrode based on the value of Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA). While the EIS characterization aims to determine the electrical conductivity produced by the electrode based on the value of electrical conductivity. The results of CV and EIS characterization obtained the highest ECSA value was 1.663 m2/g at the catalyst mass ratio Pd:Ni = 75:25 and the highest conductivity value was 3.473 x 10-2 S/cm at the catalyst mass ratio Pd:Ni = 0:100. After being characterized, the Pd-Ni/C electrodes were made into MEA and then tested for performance and durability on a single-stack DMFC. The result showed that the best MEA was obtained for the mass ratio of the catalyst Pd:Ni = 75:25 using methanol with a concentration of 10% (v/v) with the result being the OCV values of 0.707 V, a current density of 12 mA/cm2, and an optimum power density of 2.646 mW/cm2. The best MEA was tested for durability on single-stack DMFC and the results showed that the resistance of MEA was stable in the range of 0.468 V to 0.474 V for 9 hours.
