Abstract

The welding industry is one of the informal sectors that have various potential hazards, one of the dangers in welding is exposure to UV radiation coming from electric welding welding process. The amount of this UV radiation can damage the eyes of workers who play a role in increasing the risk of developing pterygium. The purpose of this study to determine the relationship of exposure to ultraviolet radiation with the risk of pterigium events in electric welding workshop workers in the market Cinde Palembang. The type of this research is quantitative analitical with cross sectional approach and using total sampling of 35 welding electrical workers. Pterigium diagnosis is performed by general practitioners and UV radiation measurements by means of the Hagner Digital Radiometer. Data analysis technique is done univariat and bivariate using fisher exact. Pterigium event happened to electric welding workshop at Cinde market (74,3%). The results of the analysis uses statistics there are relations exposure of UV radiation (P value = 0,00 CI: 1,01-38,5), working period (P value = 0,007 CI: 1,01-4,76), long exposure ( P value = 0,001 CI: 1,06-11,8) with Pterigium incidence and no relation between use of personal protective equipment with pterigium incidence (P value = 0,7 CI:0,61-1,34). The incidence of pterigium in electric welding workers is high, the researchers advise outdoor workers to design their workplaces by covering them in parts exposed directly from the sun and are advised to wear a welded mask equipped with black glass during welding.
