Abstract
Adolescence is a significant transition period from childhood to adulthood that marked by the onset of puberty. Primary dysmenorrhea is a frequent complaint of lower abdominal pain commonly experienced by reproductive-age women, naturally occurred 6-24 months after menarche without pelvic pathologic causes. Adolescents require a higher energy intake, making regular physical activity essential for their health. This study aims to investigate the relationship between physical activity and the degree of dysmenorrhea, determining the prevalence of dysmenorrhea and physical activity level, and identifying the risk factors for dysmenorrhea degree among junior high school students in Palembang City. This study is an observational analytical research with a cross-sectional design conducted on junior high school students from July to December 2023. The sampling was done using multistage random sampling method, and 90 respondents were obtained from 3 junior high schools in Palembang city. Primary data were collected through questionnaire distribution of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) and the Working ability, Location, Intensity, Days of pain, Dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD) score. About 88,9% of female students experience primary dysmenorrhea, with 34,4% experiencing mild dysmenorrhea, 38,9% moderate dysmenorrhea, and 15,6% severe dysmenorrhea. The level of physical activity among the students is 43.3% low, 55,6% moderate, and 1,1% high level of physical activity. There is no significant relationship between physical activity and the dysmenorrhea degree (p=0.459; PR=0.828; 95% CI: 0.558-1.230). The age of menarche <12 years (PR=1.186), a family history of dysmenorrhea (PR=1.225), and irregular menstrual cycles (PR=1.283) are risk factors for the severity of dysmenorrhea. There is no relationship between physical activity and dysmenorrhea degree. Most female students experience moderate primary dysmenorrhea, while the dominant level of physical activity is moderate. Factors such as age at menarche <12 years, a family history of dysmenorrhea, and irregular menstrual cycles are identified as risk factors for the degree of dysmenorrhea. Keywords: Adolescents, primary dysmenorrhea, physical activity.
