Abstract
Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that causes the human immune system to decline. Inadequate data on the prevalence of HIV in pregnancy in a particular region or population makes accurate incidence of infection difficult to estimate. This study aims to examine the prevalence and characteristics of HIV-positive pregnant women at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang for the period 2020-2022. Method: The research method used was descriptive observational research using the cross-sectional method. The medical records data that fulfilled the inclusion was 47 data from 48 medical records data at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang within periode January 1st 2020 – December 31th 2022. Data were processed using SPSS 26.0 for windows. Result: The prevalence of HIV-positive pregnant women at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital for the 2020- 2022 period was 1.23%. The majority were aged 30-39 years (54.3%), had a high school education (83%), were married (91.5%), were housewives (83%), had husbands as private workers (38.3%), and multiparity (76.7%). Based on their clinical history, the majority had a history of menarche ≤ 13 years (83%), had no history of sexually transmitted infections (53.2%), the number of sexual partners was 1 (63.8%), had a history of HIV positive sexual partners (57.4%), and had no history of blood transfusions or needle sticks (95.7%). Based on clinical characteristics, stage I (78.7%) , CD4+ 200- 500/mm3 (78.7%), undetectable viral load (68.1%), history of detection time in the third trimester (57.4%) and initiation of ARV therapy (61.7%) in the third trimester. The gestational age of the majority of the population was >28 weeks (93.6%) and underwent cesarean delivery (97.9%). All babies of the 47 HIV positive women were born with an APGAR score of 7-10 (100%) and 38 of them had a birth weight > 2500 grams (78.7%). Conclusion: The prevalence of HIV-positive pregnant women at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital for the 2020-2022 period is 1.23%. Education, counseling and outreach are needed for pregnant women to routinely check their health and triple elimination screening to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
