Abstract

Swamp soil usually has a low soil fertility, continued production of paddy in the swamp soil for one season could be improved by cultivication of ratoon paddy. Biochar, organic fertilizer and nitrogen fertilizer could be utilized to improve soil fertility in swamp land. This study was aimed to determine the combination of organic fertilizer and biochar from the main paddy residues, and added nitrogen fertilizer at beginning of ratoon paddy on the growth, productivity and nitrogen uptake of ratoon. This study was conducted in greenhouse, Department of Soil Science, Agriculture Faculty, Sriwijaya University, from May to December 2017. The design used in this study was Completely Randomized Design with five treatments was P1 = Fertilizer N recommendation on ratoon, P2 = residue Biochar, Organic Fertilizer, P3 = Residue Biochar, Organic Fertilizer + ½ N recommendation on ratoon, P4 = Residue Biochar, Organic Fertilizer + 3/4 N recommendation on ratoon, P5 = Residue Biochar, Organic Fertilizer + N recommendation on ratoon. The parameters observed in this study were plant height (cm), maximum number of tillers, number of productive tillers, weight per 100 grains, empty grain (%), unpaid grain (%), weight of dry milled grain and nitrogen uptake of ratoon paddy. The results of this research showed that combination of residues from biochar, organic fertilizer and N fertilizer (125 kg ha-1) at ratoon was the best combination to increase plant height, maximum number of tillers, number of productive tillers, dried milled grain and Nitrogen uptake of ratoon paddy at swamp soil. On the other hand, combination of residues biochar, organic fertilizer, plus nitrogen fertilizer (187 kg ha-1) at ratoon was the best combination in increasing the weight of 1000 grains of ratoon paddy at swamp soil. It is recommended to do a research on addition of other anorganic fertilizer, lower dosage of biochar and compost for ratoon paddy in swamp land.
