Abstract
Scabies, is a highly contagious skin infection caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites, is a significant health concern in Indonesia, ranking as the third most prevalent skin disease. This study explores the determinants of scabies among cat owners visiting the Animal Hospital of South Sumatra Province in 2023. A cross-sectional study involving 112 respondents was conducted, utilizing random sampling. Various factors, including personal hygiene practices, environmental conditions, and cat care methods, were assessed for their association with scabies infections among cat owners. Statistical analysis included univariate, bivariate (chi-square test), and multivariate (multiple logistic regression) methods. Findings indicate that 21.4% of respondents had scabies. Significant correlations were found between scabies and the use of antiseptics or soap (p-value 0,0001), clothing cleanliness (p-value 0,019), towel cleanliness (p-value 0,001), cat care methods (p-value 0,0001), and room lighting (p-value 0,0001). However, no significant relationship was observed between scabies and bedsheet cleanliness (p-value 0,222), room humidity (p-value 0,307), or temperature (p-value 1,000). The primary determinant of scabies among cat owners visiting the Animal Hospital of South Sumatra is the use of antiseptics or soap, which strongly influences scabies occurrence. These findings underscore the importance of emphasising personal hygiene and environmental conditions, especially for individuals in close contact with pet animals.
