Abstract

Aluminum used drink cans are recycled by companies to be more useful into beverage packaging. Recycling method that are often be used is casting (peleburan). In casting process, the metal was melted at the starting point of 650c and then the aluminum used drink cans were put into the kowi, until beyond the melting point of approximately 900c, then proceeded to the pouring process into the mold. One of the combustion systems of smelting metal is indirect combustion. This method has in common with the process of boiling water on the stove that is burst of fire from beneath of aluminum logging smelting furnace. The aluminum cast was treated by heat treatment of quenching water at 400c while annealing at 415c in one hour retention. The tests included testing of chemical composition, hardness and weathering. The results of chemical composition test shot by using portabel x-ray flourscene (xrf) showed that there were still elements of iron contained in aluminum. The results of hardness test showed that the highest hardness was in quenching water treatment with the value of 61.12 BHN, the lowest hardness value was in annealing treatment of 50.56 BHN, and value of 54.09 BHN was the result of hardness without heat treatment. The results of specific abrasion weathering were 6.63 x 10 mm2/kg on quenching water treatment as the highest specific abrasion, 4.71x 10 mm2/kg on annealing heat treatment and 3.05 x 10 mm2/kg for the result of weathering without heat treatment.
