Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of NiMo/Ti-PiLC and NiMo/Mn-PiLC catalysts for upgrading bio-oil resulting from palm kernel shell pyrolysis has been carried out. In this research, a pillarization process was carried out by adding Ti and Mn metal to bentonite, an impregnation process of NiMo metal into Ti/Mn PiLC and a catalyst performance test on bio-oil upgrading products under conditions of 70 bar, 350oC for 6 hours. Catalyst characterization using SAA, XRD, SEM-EDX, TPD-NH3, and XRF. The results of XRD analysis showed an increase in the basal distance of 0.1% on Ti-PiLC and 0.04% on Mn-PiLC, and no MoO3 peak was found on NiMo/Ti-PiLC while it was found on NiMo/Mn-PiLC. The results of analysis with TPD-NH3 showed an increase in acidity of 0.08% for Ti-PiLC and 0.01% for Mn-PiLC. After being impregnated with NiMo metal, the acidity increased in NiMo/Ti-PiLC but in NiMo/Mn-PiLC there was a decrease in acidity from bentonite. The results of SAA analysis show an increase in surface area after pillarization and after being impregnated with NiMo metal on NiMo/Ti-PiLC, but on NiMo/Mn-PiLC there is a decrease. The metal distribution in SEM-EDX shows that the NiMo/Ti-PiLC catalyst is more evenly distributed compared to NiMo/Mn-PiLC. Bio-oil upgrading products using NiMo/Ti-PILC and NiMo/Mn-PiLC catalysts were measured using CHN-Elemental Analyzer analysis, it was found that the combustion heating value increased 2- fold compared to bio-oil resulting from pyrolysis. This is in line with an increase in the weight percent of carbon and hydrogen and a decrease in oxygen content.
