Abstract

Domestic wastewater is the biggest pollutant that enters the waters and contributes to increasing pollution. It because 60-80% of the clean water used is discharged into the environment as waste water. Waste water can be a carrier medium for pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli which is harmful to health. The presence of Escherichia coli in the waters can be a microbiological indicator that states the quality of a waters. In some rivers in Palembang, it is known that the number of Escherichia coli has exceeded the quality standard set in the PERGUB River Water Quality Standards South Sumatra Number 16 of 2005. Therefore, there is a need to reduce the number of Escherichia coli in domestic waste water, one of them Constructed Wetland uses Phragmites sp., Typha angustifolia and Heliconia psittacorum plants. The purpose of this research is to determine the magnitude of the decrease in the number of Escherichia coli bacteria in domestic wastewater with Constructed wetland systems using Phragmites sp., Typha angustifolia and Heliconia psittacorum plants and analyze the ability of these plants to reduce Escherichia coli bacteria. As well as knowing the Constructed Wetland system is the most optimal in reducing the number of Escherichia coli bacteria. This research was conducted from March to June 2019. The method used in this study was an experimental method, which saw a decrease in the number of Escherichia coli in system constructed wetland using several types of plants (Phragmites sp., Typha angustifolia and Heliconia psittacorum). The design used in this study was Randomized Block Design (RBD), with 4 treatments namely CW 1 (CW + Typha sp.), CW 2 (CW + Heliconia sp.), CW 3 (CW + Phragmites sp.), CW 4 (CW without plants). Each treatment was repeated 2 times, so that it would produce 8 experimental units. The results showed that the entire Constructed Wetland system tested was able to reduce the number of Escherichia coli bacteria in domestic wastewater >80%. Decreasing the amount of Escherichia coli using Constructed Wetland with Typha angustifolia, Heliconia psittacorum and, Phragmites sp. respectively at 90.24% ± 0.01; 92.55% ± 0.06; 96.05% ± 0.03. Whereas Constructed Wetland that does not use plants has an efficiency of 84.55% ± 0.07. Based on these data, Constructed Wetland with Phragmites is the best system to reduce the amount of Escherichia coli bacteria from domestic wastewater.
