Abstract

Free Fatty Acids extracted from crude palm oil can be source of substrate to produce lactic acid through processes of fermentation. The lactic acid converted to lactide and then the and product of polylactic acid (PLA). The aim of the research was to study the effects of various concentration of Clostridium sporogenes culture and various concentration of lactic combination culture of Leuconostoc mesentroides, Lactobacillus brevis, Pediococcus cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus plantarum on lactic acid yield. In this experiments, the effects of various treatments of CuCl2 catalyst and conditions of polymerization processes on polylactic acid yield and its characteristics also were intensively studied. The results of experiment showed that the lactic acid yield reached as high as 60% through 2 stage fermentations. The average polylactic acid yield was 32.16%. The polylactic acid has an average molecular weight of 105.000 and average tensile strength of 1.84 kgf/mm2
