Abstract

Phytoremediation is a natural attempt to use plants to remove pollutants from contaminated soil or waters. Azolla pinnata is one of the water plants that can be used as phytoremediator. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of A. pinnata as a copper (Cu) metal phytoremediator and to obtain the best dose of A. pinnata biomass in reducing the concentration of Cu metal in the land from Karya Jaya Landfill, Palembang. This research was conducted in July 2018 until April 2019 at the Glass House of the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Soil samples were obtained from Karya Jaya Landfills, Palembang. It is known that the initial Cu content of 234.24 mg kg-1. The research method used is a completely randomized design with treatment A0 = 0 g A.pinnata / tray (equivalent to 0 g m-2), A1 = 10 g A.pinnata / tray (equivalent to 106 g m-2), A2 = 20 g A. pinnata / tray (equivalent to 213 g m-2), A3 = 30 g A. pinnata / tray (equivalent to 320 g m-2), and repeated five times. The results of this study showed Cu metal uptake in the treatment 38.33 µg / dry biomass on treatment 10 g A. pinnata/tray, 65.60 µg / dry biomass on treatment 20 g A. pinnata/tray, and 112.00 µg / dry biomass on treatment 30 g A. pinnata/tray. Cu metal uptake by A. pinnata is the result of calculating the metal content of the azolla tissue with azolla biomass. In the fifth week of the study showed levels of Cu in the soil decreased until it reached were 8.80 mg kg-1 on treatment 10 g A. pinnata/tray, 6.76 mg kg-1 on treatment 20 g A. pinnata/tray and 4.80 mg kg-1 on treatment 30 g A. pinnata/tray. The treatment of A. pinnata was able to reduce Cu metal levels in the land of Karya Jaya landfill Palembang as much as 229,44 mg kg-1 within five weeks and with best treatment 30 g A. pinnata or equivalent to 320 g m-2 . A. pinnata was able to reduce Cu metal levels below the critical limit. Keywords: Azolla pinnata, phytoremediation, copper.
