Abstract

Acid mine drainage is water with a low pH value and metal solubility that tends to increase which is formed due to the reaction between sulfide, oxygen and water minerals. The oxidation reaction releases H + ions into the water, which decreases the pH value of the water. Characteristics of Acid Mine Water which has a low pH with high metal solubility has the potential to have a negative impact on the environment. Handling of mine acid water is generally carried out actively by using quicklime neutralizing ingredients, to reduce dependence on the use of quicklime can be done by using other neutralizing materials such as biomass. Rukmana (1977) explained in his book that in every 100 grams of cassava skin containing calcium of 0.63 grams, calcium is an alkali metal that is able to cause alkaline pH when reacting with water so that with this cassava skin can be said to have the potential as a pH enhancing medium acid mine drainage. Cassava peel can be used as a metal adsorbent as well, according to Nur, M, (2010), explaining that the adsorption ability is owned by cassava skin due to the presence of hydroxide and amine functional groups in cassava skin which are able to bind with metal ions. The research was carried out by mixing neutralizing material with acid mine water for 2 hours of reaction using magnetic stirrer to stir, and the pH meter to measure the final pH of the reaction with observation parameters was the speed of stirring against the final pH of the reaction, the maximum pH that could be achieved in the use of cassava peel as a neutralizing material, Fe metal can be reduced by using cassava peel in neutralizing acid mine drainage and the impact of using cassava skin as a neutralizing medium on the turbidity of acid mine drainage. The results showed that the stirring speed affected the hph of the reaction result, the faster the mixing, the higher the final pH. The maximum pH that can be achieved by cassava peel in the use of 20 grams of cassava peel is at a pH value of 4.89. Cassava skin can be used as a metal binding media for Fe which is contained in acid mine drainage which is based on the experiment, the result is a decrease in Fe metal content which is contained along with the addition of the amount of cassava peel used, which is down 0.89 mg / l in sample 2 became 5 mg / l, from the previous 5.89 mg / l in sample 1, down 0.8 mg / l in sample 3 to 4.2 mg / l, from the previous 5 mg / l in sample 2, fell 0.3 mg / l in sample 4 to 3.9 mg / l, from the previous 4.2 mg / l in sample 3, and dropped 0.38 mg / l in sample 5 to 3.42 mg / l, from the previous 3.9 mg / l in sample 4. Conclusions from the study showed that cassava skin has the potential to be used as a neutralizing medium for acid mine drainage, especially in the absorption media of Fe metal, while to be used as a medium to increase pH, cassava skin still cannot be used as neutralizing acid mine drainage due to the final pH that can achieved only at pH 4.89, but in its utilization it is recommended to use a screening method to reduce the level of turbidity caused by its use.
