Abstract

Background: Scabies is one of the environmentally-based diseases; a skin disease from Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis infestation in close-contact society, like Islamic boarding school. This research aims to understand the association between environmental sanitation and scabies incidence in students of Qodratullah Boarding School Langkan Village, Banyuasin, South Sumatera. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytic observational research that was conducted on September 30th until October 7th, 2017. Sampling was conducted using proportionate stratified random sampling method. Sample size in this research is 150 samples. Data was collected using questionnaire, skin scrape test, and subjective environmental observation. Diagnoses were made using four cardinal signs. Results from the research was analyzed using chi-square 1 sample. Results: From 150 students, 91 (60.7%) students have scabies. Statistical test showed that humidity (p = 0.0005) and temperature (p = 0.0005) indicated that there was a chance of scabies incidence in humidity and temperature in non-environmentally suitable condition have significant difference exists with scabies incidence in humidity and temperature in environmentally suitable condition. While light (p= 0,001) indicated that there was a chance of scabies incidence in environmentally suitable condition have significant difference exists with scabies incidence in non-environmentally suitable condition. Conclusion : The frequency/number of scabies incidence was not the same between environmentally suitable condition and non-environmentally suitable condition ie, humidity, temperature, and light.
