Abstract

The increasing development and progress of modern technology has resulted in the need for research in all fields to increase rapidly, especially in the material field. The industry continues to develop requiring new material discoveries as alternative materials used in industry. The need for material that has properties that can be formed in accordance with the wishes of the current producers is very large. This material need does not occur in one field but covers all areas of human life today, starting from the fields of industry, technology, construction, even though the food sector. Composite is a material that is formed from a combination of two or more materials, where the mechanical properties of the forming materials vary. Composite is a composite material on a macro basis, so the definition of composite materials as a material system composed of a mixture / combination of two or more main elements which are macro different in form and composition of materials which are basically inseparable. In simple terms it can be defined as a composite consisting of two different material properties, namely matrix and fiber (filler). Fiber is a reinforcing material that is spread in a matrix with a certain orientation. The main function of the matrix as well as binding fibers and distributing the load to the fiber also protects the fiber from environmental influences. In composite materials, the properties that can be improved include strength, stiffness, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, wear resistance, specific gravity and influence on temperature.. Unsaturated Polyester is a type of thermosetting resin commonly called polyester only. Polyester is a liquid resin with a relatively low viscosity and hardens at room temperature with the use of a catalyst without producing gas when setting up like many other resins. Regarding its thermal properties because it contains a lot of styrene monomers, the thermal deformation temperature is lower than other thermoset resins and its long-term heat resistance is 100-140 ˚C, relatively resistant to acids except oxidizing acids, easily expanding in dissolving strirenic polymers. The use of this type of resin can be done from the hand lay-up process to complex processes, namely by mechanical processes. This resin is widely used in composite applications in the industrial world considering the price is relatively cheap, the right curing, clear color, dimensional stability and easy handling. Coir is a blanket (mesocarp) in the form of coarse coconut fibers. This fibrous part is the skin of coconut fruit and can be used as a variety of industrial raw materials. Fiber is a valuable part of coir. Judging from the physical properties of coconut fiber, it consists of coarse and fine fibers, the quality of fiber is determined by color, containing woody elements. Products that have been produced from these fibrous parts of coconut are like carpets, doormats, brushes, car seat material, ropes and more. The fiber can be obtained from fiber, hairy fibers, and husks or bran or cork. The fiber mat is used for cleaning brushes, brooms, mats while husks or cork are used as planting media and potassium fertilizer. In addition, because fiber has a characteristic that makes coconut fiber used as a craft. The chemical composition of coconut fiber generally consists of cellulose, lignin, pyroligneous acid, gas, charcoal, tannin, and potassium. Each coconut contains 525 grams of fiber (75% of coir), and coconut coir powder is 175 grams (25% of coir). In this study the materials used were coconut fiber and polyester resin. The specimen manufacture of motorcycle helmets is printed using a hand lay-up, impact testing with the Charpy method with ASTM D 256 standard, tensile testing with ASTM D 638-02 standard, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) observations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the strength of specimens from coconut fiber composite composite hel materials with polyester resin to the effect of making hand lay-ups and determine the type of tensile and impact testing with SEM photos. Test results condition because the impact strength and pull values are still low which can result in fatal specimens in the event of collisions or collisions that can damage the helmet. The average impact strength of polyester resin with the highest strength in resin is 23% for stresses of 30.73 Mpa, strain of 9.96%, and elasticity of 3.10 Mpa. The average tensile strength of polyester resin with the highest strength on 33% resin for impact energy is 17,9008 kg.m and the impact value of the business is 0.1387 kg.m / mm2. Observation of fault results found broken fiber broken type.
