Abstract

Introduction: Thyroid carcinoma is a malignancy of the endocrine glands which accounts for 1,1% of all malignancies in human. There were 213.000 new cases of thyroid carcinoma with incidence rate of 3,1/100.000 population around the globe in 2008. Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid carcinoma which accounts for 80% of all cases. This research was done to learn the characteristics of thyroid malignancies, especially the papillary type, according to sociodemography and risk factors of the patients. Methods: This is a descriptive observational research using medical records from the department of surgery in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin central general hospital as the subjects. Result: There are 61 samples in this research, according to gender, obtained women with a percentage of 83.6% (N=51). Based on age, the highest is in the age group 25-34 years with a percentage of 23% (N=14). According to the subjects’ habitation, there were 65,6% (N=40) living in the city and low plains were 88.5% (N=54). The subjects’ distribution according to the most variant of the carcinoma was 52,5% (N=32) follicular. According to the past history of disease, the most was goiter with percentage of 88,5% (N=54). According to radiation exposure as much as 100% never exposed. According to clinical manifestations, there were 67,2% (N=41) without clinical manifestations. According to family history, there were 100% no family suffering from thyroid malignancies. Summary: Papillary thyroid carcinoma is found most in women and age at 25-34 years with most residential distribution in city and low plains (coast). The most variant is follicular and most often preceded by goiter without accompanied by radiation exposure. Most patients do not complain of symptoms and all do not have a family history of thyroid malignancies.
