Abstract

Background :Kinang is a mixture of Piper betle L., Areca catechu L., Uncaria gambir and Calsium hydroxide that have been used in Indonesia since long time ago It is believed to be good for maintaining oral healthy. Some studies hade mentioned that the content of the four components of the kinang was able to accelerate wound healing. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the effectivity of kinang extract for reepithelization process on lower lip wounds of male rat wistar (Rattus norvegicus). Methods : In vivo experimental research with posttest only control group design was conducted at Animal House of Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University and Laboratory of Pathology Anatomy Dyatnitalis Palembang. Thirty rats were divided into 5 groups, namely Groups 1, 2, and 3 were given 5%, 10%, and 20% kinang extract, group 4 were given hyaluronic acid 0.2% and group 5 were given placebo ointment. Lower lip wound of rats was induced with a cylinder diamond bur and was treated by topical twice daily for seven days and made histologic preparations. The thickness of the epithelial layer was measured by using Olympus software and analyzed statistically. Results : kinang extract group 20% had the highest epithelial layer thickness compared to other groups. The kinang extract group of 10% and 20% differed significantly with the negative control (p <0.05) and was not significant with positive control (p> 0.05). Conclusion : kinang extract has effectivity to lower lip wound of rats with the effective kinang extract are concentration 10% and 20%. The average of epithelial thickness after treatment of each group was 80.60 μm (kinang extract group 5%), 164.73 μm (kinang extract group 10% ), 211.59 μm (kinang extract group 20%) 204.90 μm (Gengigel) , and 62.76 μm (placebo ointment).
