Abstract

This research is a qualitative research which aims to analyze the students‟ difficulties in understanding the word-problem mathematical of problem solving in eight grade of SMP N 1 Palembang. The data collection technique is done by a written test consisting of four problem-solving questions in word-problem type, material relations and functions to see the difficulty understanding what students did when analyzing the problem. The test also given by refer to the characteristics of problem solving, especially word-problems. As for interview data, its refers to the category of difficulties understanding the problem. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that students in eight-three grade of SMP N 1 Palembang have difficulty understanding problems including representing questions in other forms, interpreting key words of problems, and not understanding what is asked in the questions.
