Abstract

Stainless Steel is a metal that has the corrosion resistance, high oxidation resistance and others so that the welding of stainless steel is widely used mainly in pipes with various welding methods such SMAW and TIG welding. The writing of scientific papers aimed to compare the effect of physical and mechanical properties of the weld with SMAW and TIG methods. Welding is performed on a 316 stainless steel pipe using the V root pass with 1G position. In SMAW the welded specimens using AWS A5.4 E-316L electrodes and for TIG welding electrodes using AWS A5.9 ER-316L. Welding parameters used are 60A, 80A, 100A, and 140A Ampere for SMAW method while the TIG welding method using 100A and 140A ampere. The further testing used are visual, dye penetrant, ultrasonic, hardness and metallography. Based on data from the test results indicate that there are many welding defects on types of SMAW welding, defective surface section form the undercut and spatter, and inside the defects such as lack of fusion, while on the type of TIG welding is defective part only in the form of tungsten inclusion. The highest hardness values contained in the type SMAW welding current which is 140A 103kg / mm2 in the welding area and 107,3kg / mm2 in the HAZ area. Testing of the macro metallographic show that the higher welding current is widening the area HAZ while the micro metallography testing showed the most refined grains contained in SMAW welding 140A so that it has the highest hardness.
