Abstract

Background: Depression is one of the clinical manifestations that can occur in patients with SLE. It is suspected that SLE disease activity level may affect the incidence of depression. This research aims to analyze the correlation between SLE disease activity level and level of depression in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus at Persatuan Lupus Sumatera Selatan and Poliklinik Ilmu Penyakit Dalam RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: This research was an observational analytic cross sectional study. The research was conducted from September 2017 to November 2017 at Persatuan Lupus Sumatera Selatan and Poliklinik Ilmu Penyakit Dalam RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Samples were taken for 42 SLE patients and using consecutive sampling method. Data were collected from the MEX-SLEDAI and BDI questionnaires, and interviews of the respondents. In addition, patient’s medical record data were also taken to complete the research data. Statistical analyzing was performed using One Way Anova. Results: There is a significant relationship (p value = 0,000) between SLE disease activity level and level of depression in patients with SLE at Persatuan Lupus Sumatera Selatan and Poliklinik Ilmu Penyakit Dalam RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The relation of each category from research variable are: mild activity level of SLE: 80% did not experience depression, 20% mild level of depression; moderate activity level of SLE: 44.4% did not experience depression, 33.3% mild level of depression, 22.2% moderate level of depression; severe activity level of SLE: 7.1% did not experience depression, 7.1% mild level of depression, 21.4% moderate level of depression and 64.3% severe level of depression. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between SLE disease activity level and level of depression in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus at Persatuan Lupus Sumatera Selatan and Poliklinik Ilmu Penyakit Dalam RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The higher SLE disease activity level correlate with the higher level of depression experienced by patients.
