Abstract

Background: Parenting style holds an important role in psychological development of adolescent, including confidence. Confidence is one of the factors that can affect talent, interest, and potency development which exist in student so that they could thrive into success or achievement, also strongly contributed to students motivation. This research intends to know the correlation between students’ perception of parenting style and the level of confidence amongst students of SMP Xaverius 1 Palembang. Method: This research is an analytic study with cross sectional design study which use primary data. Samples were taken by using purposive sampling method using questionnaire. From 94 cases of grade VII-IX students, 91 cases fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: From 91 students, the amount of students who is having a authoritative perception of parenting is 77 (84.6%), 12 students (13.2%) is with authoritarian, and 2 students (2.2%) with permissive. From the result of student analysis of distribution, it is found that 17 students (18.7%) is having high self confidence, 38 students (41.8%) with medium self confidence, and 36 students (39.6%) with low self confidence. The results of bivariate analysis between students' perceptions of parenting parents with self-confidence obtained p = 0.040 and r = 0.216 in the democratic type, the value of p = 0.026 and r = -0.234 in the authoritarian type, and the value p = 0.523 and r = 0.068 on permissive type. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship and positive correlation between student perception about democratic style of parenting and self confidence, also there is a significant relationship and positive correlation between student perception about authoritatrian style of parenting and self confidence. However, there is no significant relationship between student perception about permissive style of parenting and self confidence.
