Abstract

Background: Menstrual cycle disorder on hyperthyroidism patients needs further research considering the high prevelence of hyperthyroidism among Indonesian women and its impact to women’s reproductive health. Previous researches about menstrual cycle disorder on hyperthyroidism patients still provide inconsistent results. The objective of this study is to identify the description of the menstrual cycle among hyperthyroidism patients prior to and subsequent to treatment in RSUP Dr Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This research is a descriptive observational study. 68 hyperthyroidism patients at Policlinic RSMH were interviewed to identified the description of their menstrual cycle prior to and subsequent to treatment. Datas obtained in this study are age, treatment duration until menstrual cycle changed, and menstrual cycle disorder history prior to and subsequent to treatment. Results: Most of hypertiroidism patients were classified in 30-39 years old age group (42.6%) and the least were classified in 15-19 years age group (5.9%). Majority of the subects already underwent the theraphy for >12 months. Among all of the subjects, 49 people have history of menstrual cycle disorder, 35 people have history of oligomenorrhea, 8 people with polymenorrhea, and 6 people with amenorrhea. The age group of 15-19 years old has the highest percentage of patients with menstrual cycle disorder history, followed by 20-29 years old group, 30-39 years old group, and 40-49 years old group. There is a reduction of people with menstrual cycle disorder history from 49 people to 17 people subsequent to treatment. 41 patients experienced changes subsequent to treatment, 20 patients among them experienced changes after >12 months of theraphy. Conclusions: Majority of hyperthyroidism patients experienced menstrual cycle disorder in a type of oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, and amenorrhea. There is a percentage reduction of patients with menstrual cycle disorder history along with the increasement of age. Adequate theraphy of hyperthyroidism can provide improvement of menstrual cycle disorder. Majority of patients experienced improvement subsequent to more than 12 months of theraphy.
